When a founder meets someone who could help build an idea, the conversation can jump quickly to features. A more useful beginning is a recent moment when the problem actually occurred. Who was involved? What were they trying to do? Where did the process break down?
A concrete story gives both people something to examine. It can reveal whether the obstacle is missing information, an awkward handoff or a task that no one owns. Those are different problems, even when they first appear in the same product pitch.
A simple discussion script
Try this sequence: describe the current workflow, identify the person most affected, name the smallest useful improvement, then explain how you would recognise progress. Ask the builder which assumption seems most uncertain before asking for a delivery estimate.
The builder’s role is to make trade-offs understandable. Explain what could be tested with a prototype, what depends on access to real data and what would become expensive to change later. A shared understanding should come before a confident-looking plan.
Leave with something testable
A good first meeting might end with a sketch, three interview questions or a sample workflow to observe. It does not need to end with a complete specification. The useful outcome is a clearer next step that both people understand.
