A product brief can describe an exciting future without explaining the day a user is trying to get through. Our preferred starting point is more concrete: what are people doing, where do they lose context, and what would a better experience allow them to accomplish?
These questions help connect engineering choices to a purpose. A new feature should have a clear role in the work, rather than exist simply because the technology makes it possible.
Design for real conditions
People encounter software through different devices, working environments and levels of familiarity. We treat those differences as part of the design brief. A clear interface, a recoverable error and a useful response on a small screen all belong in the same conversation as architecture.
Building from Africa gives our company a reason to pay attention to context rather than assume a single kind of user. Our ambition is to make technology that can travel widely while staying attentive to the circumstances in which it is used.
